2010 ORACLE Australian Retailer of the Year: Smiggle

Specialty stationery retailer Smiggle unveiled its first store in Melbourne in 2003 making folders, pens and staplers a colourful fashion statement. Four years later, the Just Group took ownership of the Smiggle brand with 54 stores opening since the acquisition.

2010 Australian Young Retailer of the Year Charles Hammersla started his retail career as a 15 year old high school student working at Coles and has since moved up the ranks to his current position of National Compliance Manager- Facilities for Kmart Australia. At 25, one of his key achievements has been representing the national brand at the Queensland Industrial Relations Tribunal.

Before being named 2010 Australian Independent Retailer of the Year, family run business Sydney Street Casual was national runner up in the Ragtrader Independent Fashion Retailer of the Year Award 2009. A strong business in the local community, Sydney Street Casual was also inducted into the Burnside Village Hall of Fame in June 2010. 

Sydney Street Casual is the top performing boutique in Australia (from over 230 outlets) for the very popular ‘Not Your Daughter’s Jeans’ (NYDJ) label from the USA. NYDJ are the original ‘Tummy Tuck’ jeans that have been featured on the international television show ‘Oprah’, as well as local shows ‘Current Affair’ and ‘Today Tonight’.

2010 ARA Retail Institute Australian Retail Graduate of the Year Lisa Balakas, Co-founder and Creative Director of Ripe Maternity Wear, started Ripe as a successful wholesale supplier to the niche maternity wear market in 1996. In 2005 she ventured into stand alone retail stores and continues to run this business successfully.
